"How do you get around!?"

I heard that last night at a dinner party when a friend of mine said she doesn't have a car. I had to chime in and say that we get around very well. I was amazed at the complete disbelief in the questioner's voice when we said that. ("Really!?")
Wow.

I live in the sweet spot for all public SF transportation - 15th and Church. It is soooo easy for me to get anywhere! Of course, I think SF public transportation is very easy and accessible, but if I lived in the East Bay, I might have to reconsider.

The only downside to not having a car in the city is that I don't think about taking off on the weekends all the time.

May I recommend Golden Gate Transit to Pantoll atop Mt Tam, a lovely downhill hike to Stinson Beach via the Steep Ravine Trail, then GGT will take you back over the mountain and back across the Golden Gate. Unfortunately, they no longer run a bus out to Pt Reyes and Inverness.

i walk. i really like walking. i like saying good morning to people who are also walking. i like seeing the dogs run around. i like breathing the air and feeling the weather.

i actually like it so much that i haven't gotten a bike. i'm not anti bike or anything, but if i got one i would use it and wouldn't walk as much.

i ride buses when i need to. that's the other good part about walking -- if the bus doesn't drop me off close -- its not a big deal for me to walk to where i need to go. i do meetings sometimes -- i'm more refreshed for that meeting then if i had been stressing out behind the wheel.

if you are a public transit type -- take the ferry sometime! its really worth doing.

I'm a pedestrian too. I think walking is still, by far, the most efficient transportation system -- and the cheaper too.

In 1900, an average american worker would walk 15 minutes to get to its workplace and 15 minutes again back home. In 1950, the "democratization of car" had occured and car, an invention designed to increase our commuting speed, was made accessible to the average american worker. Yet, in 1950 the average motorized american worker would now drive 45 minutes to get to its workplace and 45 minutes again back home. An hour a day was lost in the name of speed.

Public transportation and walking when I can. Unforunately my area does not have the luxury of a well funded mass transit system so my options are limited. Even by my living in a part of town where I do walk to most of my shopping, coffeeshops, etc. I have been spoiled by being a former Washington, DC area resident with its public transportation system.

For my own personal life, I use my bicycle. My bike takes me everywhere. On my days off from my personal assisting/raw food chef job, I am on my SPECIALIZED from early morning until late at night.

My employer expects me to take her SUV out on errands for her house. I arrange and organize my SUV trips to be efficient.

I like to criss cross the U.S. on Greyhound. Somehow, I always manage to be on a bus that forms a unique community of travelers who instantly create a close bond from Chicago to L.A. (or L.A. to Chicago)

During the last four years, I fly regularly because I have less time and more money. Th guys on airplanes smell better than the guys on the bus. But the guys on the bus are much more interesting than the guys on the plane.

I may have to check out on why Greyhound "dropped" their service in my area. The people on the bus may be "smellier", but I have gotten more interesting traveling stories. Also I like to have mre options other than driving.

Yeah. I don't mind the so-called "smelly" people either. I use public transport and my bicycle during the week. I really only utilize my car on the weekends. I plan to lose my car after I pay it off. It has helped rebuild my credit, and now that I'm almost done paying it off, I'm going to get rid of it. I miss my carless days.
Here in South Florida, car is king, and though people complain about the high price of owning a vehicle, very few seem to care enough to divorce it. That used to frustrate me, but not anymore. Quite frankly, I just try to spread the good news by doing; i.e.: riding my bicycle around town and getting on the bus/metro/commuter rail! Like you, Mike, I love having options, too.
