What if it's not really a station at all?
Thu, March 2, 2006 - 4:27 PMSo my favorite station is a little unorthodox. It's the Maine State Ferry Terminal in Rockland, Maine. Was looking for a photo online, but this is a small town in a rural region of the country, so one is hard to come by. Guess I'll have to go shoot my own.
Actually, while the ferry terminal is very nice, I don't take the ferry from it. No, I take the Concord Trailways bus line down to Portland, Maine, where I can catch the Amtrak to Boston (The DownEaster, commonly referred in these parts as "The People's Train," due to public demand for a rail link between Maine's largest city and Boston — I am a member of TrainRider's NorthEast, who spearheaded the link), or other bus links to southern New England on Vermont Transit (Greyhound) and Concord Trailways. Buses leave on the hour to a pretty swanky terminal at South Station in Boston where I've caught Amtrak's Twilight Shoreliner to Washington DC (where you can catch the Cresent City to New Orleans). You can also catch flights from the Portland International Jetport or Boston's Logan Airport.
Now, if you decide to go in the other direction, you can catch the Concord Trailways north, up to Bangor. So what's in Bangor, you might ask? Well, there's a connector bus over to Mount Desert Island, and if Acadia National Park isn't enough for you, you can catch The Cat ferry over to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. And if you want to keep going, MacKenzie Bus Lines will take you to Halifax (where you can catch the VIA Rail, something I hope to do someday). Now, if your desire is to travel a little slower, and see one of Maine's most scenic counties, you can catch the Cyr Bus Line across the furthest reaches DownEast Maine over to Calais and Eastport, faaaar over by New Brunswick. There you may connect with other Canadian bus lines over the border, something I'm still investigating. It's more rural, but very scenic and interesting.
All this from my little ferry terminal in Rockland.
You can also catch the ferry to Vinalhaven and North Haven islands from the terminal. Wonderful if you're taking a bicycle. Lousy if you have to lug along a car (bleech!).
Thanks for asking.

Re: Describe Your Ideal Bus stop/Transit hub/Train station...
Sat, May 27, 2006 - 10:36 AMMy ideal bus stop/transit station has to have a coffee shop of some kind, lol. In addition, it should have proper coverage and protection from the elements and it should have nice comfy seats, an info kiosk to the get the latest on traffic delays, bus route changes and an ATM right next to it or within it. Also, there should be a newspaper/magazine stand with a photo booth. Lol. Seriously. -

Tue, November 7, 2006 - 1:44 AMWe have a lot of beautiful rail buildings in the Netherlands. I really like the old buildings.
Haarlem is my favorite.

Re: Describe Your Ideal Bus stop/Transit hub/Train station...
Tue, November 7, 2006 - 12:58 PMWhile I presume the intention of this thread is to discuss facilities rather than buildings, I, like Harmen, am a great admirer of beautiful old buildings. Our local railway station is of outstanding architectural merit. It is a major tourist attraction, has a restaurant, a formal garden, clock tower, they use the platform as a catwalk for an annual fashion show and , best of all, on Saturdays our local farmers' market takes place in the car park.
But, alas, it lacks one rather crucial facility, and that is a passenger train service, due to a shortsighted government policy that has neglected the train network in favour of roads.
There is a tourist train trip from the station only, she says, with bitter irony.
