I mostly walk (gives me a a great ass, without any gym dues!) and take the bus or BART. Although I had to wait in the pouring rain for 30 minutes today for the darn bus, while 4 busses went past me going in the OTHER direction (Grrrrr.)

Re: How do you get around?
Mon, February 2, 2004 - 11:26 AMI love my bike. There is nothing like cutting through mile after mile of car clogged streets at rush hour. It need to haul stuff that's too heavy or big for my messenger bag I slap on an xtracycle (www.xtracycle.com). Now if I could just remember where I put my rain coat.

Re: How do you get around?
Mon, February 2, 2004 - 1:06 PMI do public transit (mostly Muni), a little City Car Share, and some cabs. I get to use a company car for going to distant work sites. I've thought about getting a scooter, but I keep chickening out.

Re: How do you get around?
Mon, February 2, 2004 - 1:08 PMI chickened out on a motorcycle - got one, took the classes, then kept dropping it, and then realized I'm scared shitless of car traffic. You never know what someone's going to do! At least on foot I can run away. -

Re: How do you get around?
Mon, February 2, 2004 - 4:27 PMYes! Part of why I don't have a car is I don't like driving in city traffic. And yet I think somehow I'd be ok on a scooter!? (Though I could use it just for my commute, which is in the Outer Sunset and doesn't ahve heavy traffic.)

Re: How do you get around?
Mon, February 2, 2004 - 3:43 PMI walk, bus, BART, City Car Share, rental cars, or borrow cars/vans when needed. But mostly just walk/bus/BART.
It's amazing how many people arelike "how do you get around?!" when they find out I don't have a car.

Re: How do you get around?
Mon, February 2, 2004 - 4:24 PMI mostly walk. Where I live in upstate NY sucks this time of year so I have to get other people with cars (uck) to take me around. There is no public transportation around here thats worth taking. I should be moving down to NYC soon though so I won't have a problem anymore. I like to drive on open country roads, but city driving reaqlly bugs me out. To keep my sanity I cannot drive in any traffic.

How do you get around?
Tue, February 3, 2004 - 3:32 AMMy life has been dedicated to local travel by mass transit. I go once a week fanatically. When I got to the bay area 15 years ago, I quickly did all the BART stops, till the new Millbrae stop came in, more about that in a minute. But I find Cal-Train is the most rewarding. It only operates on weedays now. But, since it's a real train and not light rail, it really rocks and groans and has loud whistles and the whole thing. And I just got back from the far South Bay. Certain hours the thing goes as far south as Gilroy. And I slept like a baby. Each time they called out a stop, I would wake up and realize I'd been dozing again. I've not been in a relationship for many years, so that train gently rocking me to sleep is about as close as I get to love. But the Millbrae BART is great because it cross-platforms with Cal-Train, and dig this, when you get to Mountain View, Cal-Train then cross platforms with the VTA Light Rail system, which goes all the way down to Blossom Hill. When it comes to mass transit to all those little towns so many people never explore, the Peninsula has got it goin' on. And plus, San Mateo county has the most beautiful natural scenery that can be gotten to by Mass transit. My title, as a carless person is:
The Mass Transit Bedouin. -

Re: How do you get around?
Tue, February 3, 2004 - 10:22 AMThat's so awesome. I used to want to write a travel book on how to travel around California without a car. I've done exploring on BART (and can get anywhere on AC Transit, practically) I haven't done much wandering on the other transit systems. Sounds like good spring/summertime fun!
Anybody know how to get to the desert on mass transit? Like south-central CA desert? -

How do you get around?
Tue, February 3, 2004 - 11:16 PMTo get to Palm Springs area, you take Amtrak to Union Station L.A. From there you take the MetroLink train to Riverside. Then, at riverside, a small van called the Sun Link drives you on in. Then the Sun Bus system goes all the way from Palm Springs to Indio.
Also, in the High Desert area, the Metro Link gets all the way out to Victorville.

Mon, May 10, 2004 - 7:57 AMWithin a mile to 5 miles, I walk. More than 5 miles, I take the bus. If I'm leaving the city, it depends on where I'm going. If I want to escape the desert for a weekend in the pines, for example, I take a Greyhound. -

Re: How do you get around?
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 11:09 AMI ride my bike, i walk, sometimes i take a train. Do not fly either. Made that decision 12 years ago when i learned about climate change and the limits to growth. It is easier in the Netherlands, still people my age (35) without a car are very rare. Such a bitter shame. Oil shortages will stop the age of automobilism eventually but the damage to the climate will be very big by then. We have got to walk and don't look back!
Greetings,
Harmen -

Re: How do you get around?
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 3:20 PMI've always been primarily a walker. Second, a bus rider (now Metro rider--I LOVE the DC Metro).
The *idea* of bicycling is great, but up 'til now have been too fearful of riding in traffic. I've been psyching myself up with books: The Art of Urban Cycling, and Road Biking in DC. May also take a safety "Confident Rider" course. -

My God, I could have written that. Bought the bike, then the book. I've read the book, but the bike is still untouched. -

Sun, April 8, 2007 - 9:32 AMIt takes a while to get used to it. Having the right safety gear helps build confidence (gloves, helment, blinkies). I started a little more than a year ago, and I'd never go back to a car. FInd a bike buddy. If you live in SF, i'll take ya out for a spin.

Re: How do you get around?
Thu, October 26, 2006 - 8:31 AMI highly recommend a bicycle riding safety course. Here in San Francisco the Bicycle Coalition offers a two part class. The first part is in class and the second part is on the road. I would also suggest joing your local bike advocay group. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has been key in getting more bicycle (and pedestrian) friendly streets and legislation. Their website is a great source of information for all cyclists novice or professional, in San Francisco or beyond. Here is the link to their bike safety page. www.sfbike.org/ They have safety videos that you watch online.
Here is a link to the DC bicycle group www.waba.org/new/paths/index.php

Re: How do you get around?
Wed, September 13, 2006 - 3:38 PMLet's see:
97 % by my bike, in all weather at all times of day or night
2 % by foot
1 % by Tri-met/MAX
It's not that I don't like public transportation. I wish Tri-met ran all night so I could use it after work. I just really like my bike. And passing over I-5 and seeing a parking lot in both directions solidifies my decision to go car-free. -

Nice.
One car less.
Passing by cars in a Traffic Jam on my bike.
Great Feeling (tee hee hee).

Re: How do you get around?
Fri, September 22, 2006 - 2:21 PMI'm a pedestrian first. Walking just feel so good. I always get my best ideas while walking. Bikes are just too fast for me.
Besides that, I usually canoe in summer and snowshoe in winter. I live in the Canadian Arctic, so I can get pretty much everywhere with these two. Especially go out on the Land.
If I have to travel by roads -- it's very rare -- my preference then goes to hitch hiking. It's bettter than bus, because you get to meet people that actually wants to meet you. You share food, stories, laugh. It's all good. -
-
Re: How do you get around?
Fri, September 22, 2006 - 3:40 PMMy father used to fondly reminisce about his hitchhiking youth. It seems like it could be so cool, but as a woman I'd NEVER do it.

Re: How do you get around?
Mon, November 6, 2006 - 6:45 PMI just LOVE walking! I moved from a sprawling city to a smaller, more human-sized one about four years ago so that I could walkpPretty much anywhere I want to go. For a woman of my age, I've got a great arse AND great legs! I save money on not having to go to the gym, and not having to maintain a gas-guzzler.
I've got to know many of my neighbours because I walk past their houses, not whizz by in a car. I'm never late to appointments because I know how long it will take and don't think I can shave off minutes by going faster. And instead of getting increasingly stressed by traffic jams and other drivers, I arrive at my destination more relaxed than when I set out.
Away from the business centre here , pedestrians passing each other actually smile, nod - hell! - they even speak to each other. Walking makes me feel conscious of my community. I am increadingly getting a buzz from feeling virtuous - I'm doing my bit for the environment.
I HATE cars and so I'm overjoyed to find this tribe! -

It's the DENSITY not so much the SIZE that matters.
Sorry to be a wet blanket, Janet. It's just the fight for us architects / urban planners (the one's who care, at least) is getting the density up enough in our American cities so that if enough things are in walking distance, we might actually thrive without automobiles.

Sun, April 8, 2007 - 9:31 AMBike! Muni's average speed is 8 mph, and reliability is somewhere around 60%.
My bike = avg of 15 mph (12 including stop signs, etc). 100% on time reliability. -

Re: How do you get around?
Sat, May 19, 2007 - 10:41 AMMy wife and I live on 5 acres in rural AR. We get around by car. We own 2 and will probably have another when my daughter takes hers to school next year. We spend over 15 thousand dollars a year on our vehicles for paymnents, gas, insurance, and maintenance. My wife and I are searching for a community that is carless. We are in our early 50s and we will be retiring in a few years and are looking for ways to speed the process up. We love living in our peaceful setting but believe there are many other people that want to find a community that is designed around a carless culture. Entertainment, shopping, cafes, health care, parks, hiking trails, schools, grocery stores, no streets. That place is looking more and more to be in another country but even that option leaves us short on our ideal community. -

Re: How do you get around?
Tue, July 17, 2007 - 3:10 AMMostly I don't get around. I've been car free by choice for the entire 18 years of my adult life and it sucks down to the ground. I thought it might be an inspiration to people but I dont really feel as though I have changed anything very much. So what if a few people go without cars? 99.9% of people will always put the needs of their family, or their lifestyle, or their desire to get ahead, get laid, whatever, first when it boils down to it. It's not that human nature is inherently evil, there's nothing wrong with any of these people. I've come round to the views of buckminster fuller: "you do not change anything by challenging the existing. Create a new model and render the existing obsolete." Cars suck, nasty dangerous smelly things... but I'd do more for the environment if I had a car and used the extra resources it would put at my disposal, to design some solar powered recycling robots or ocean-cleaning von neumann machines or something... wouldn't I? I think I was naive to go without driving, and stubborn, and arrogant. I think I will get my license this year.
Oops I ranted. Sorry. :) -

Re: How do you get around?
Tue, July 17, 2007 - 7:12 AMHey, Alex:
I think you've paid your dues for being car-less for such a long time. Also, when you do get a car, there are steps you can take to ensure that it is small, light and energy efficient. People who drive aren't inherently evil people. I don't think anyone in this tribe advocates that. What this tribe and many others are pushing for are alternatives. Also, you're claiming that what you've done hasn't influenced or inspired anyone, but how are you so sure? Not because people don't come up to you and say, "Hey, you know your lifestyle inspires me," doesn't mean that it isn't happening.
With that said, I do understand your frustration.

Re: How do you get around?
Sat, September 1, 2007 - 7:39 AM"but I'd do more for the environment if I had a car and used the extra resources it would put at my disposal"
Wouldn't having a car zap more of your resources (i.e. it's a money-sucking machine). I think when you don't have a car, it's key to live close to mass transit, and other resources. I consciously chose to live close to school, close to BART, bus lines, citycarshare pods. When I do go on a day trip with a friend who has a car, I would offer to pay for gas or meal, so i don't seem like a pest.
In my daily life, I mostly walk or bike. But yesterday, I needed to take my bunny to the vet and I couldn't take him on city car share. So I took a cab. Taking a cab once in a while is still cheaper than owning a car, and it feels like a treat.
P.S. I like your quote.
